Note: this does not express the naming conventions of every race, just the major ones.

Elven Names:

House names:

Elf Houses are complex in their social ranking and naming mechanisms. Great Houses are considered to be ruling houses. Usually there are two or three in a city with one house being the most dominant. The ruling Great House is then considered the rulers of that city.

Next are the Noble houses that are of middling rank in importance and influence with most making up the council that elects and advises the ruling house. There can be anywhere from ten to twenty Noble houses at a given time. Noble houses and Great houses often intermarry to keep house alliances strong.

Then there are Lesser Houses, usually reserved for officiates and diplomats who interact with other cities and with other races. They make up the majority of the Elven Houses numbering usually anywhere from fifty to a hundred strong. They usually marry amongst themselves, but occasionally there will be a match made to a Noble House, again to keep the bloodlines from becoming stagnant.

Below the Lesser Houses, there are the Common Houses that make up the rest of the elven population. Each number varies widely from city to city. They are often the soldiers and servants, to the more powerful houses.. Usually a Common house will swear fealty to a Lesser house, sealing the allegiance with a marriage.

Finally there are the Houseless, usually they are half elven or quarter elven offspring from those within a house. Essentially they are considered the 'bastard' child though no Elf would ever call them that as such. They are also those Elves and their descendants who wee stripped of their house names because of misdeeds or dishonorable acts. Those who suffer Lunar Madness fall into this societal bracket. A House that has had someone declared as Houseless is given a black mark against their name that can take centuries to repair the damage of. Should the act of making someone Houseless leave their house with no named successors then that house is dissolved and its assets redistributed among the Elven population.

Elf House names are also relatively fluid in their naming conventions. Depending on the power and influence of the Elven House, a person's House name can change through marriage. Usually the name is changed to the more dominant of the two houses. However, if both houses are equally dominant, then different rules apply. If the two houses are equally matched, and there are other offspring to carry on the house name in both houses, a new house is then created out of the joining of the Houses. The new house name always takes an element from each house to honor the new union.

For example House Jadeleaf and Emberstorm are two Common houses with another child each to carry on their House names so the two who are being married combine their names into a new name that sounds appeasing: Stormleaf.

In the event that one of the equally matched houses does not have a secondary offspring to carry on a house name and the other house does, the house with more than one offspring then marries into the other house and takes on that house's name.

For example Houses Goldenbough and Starbower are uniting in marriage, but Starbower does not have a secondary offspring and House Goldenbough does. The person being married from House Goldenbough then becomes a Starbower.

More often than not, there will be a union of houses where there is no secondary offspring to either house. At that time, the two houses can either go to a temple and pray for guidance into who will have the dominant name for the unified Houses, or again a new House will be created. In this instance, a new house name is chosen entirely by the two who are being united in Marriage.

For example the House Foxglen and Dawnlight only have one offspring each who are about to be united in marriage. The two people in the union then decide on a new name usually based on something they both like such as Dancingbrook.

In the rare event that a House has no offspring to pass on it's legacy to, the ruling member of the house may choose a successor to carry on the House name. If a House falls without a successor, then the lands, titles and any Houses who have sworn fealty to it are distributed out among the all the Houses by the council. The House name is entered into a stone tablet and is forbidden to be used again for a thousand years in order to pay respects to the fallen house.

Elven first names:

Elven first names are often musical to the ear. They follow no real naming convention and are decided upon by the parents separate of any House politics. Occasionally an ancestor is honored by giving a child a similar name, but there is no child that is named directly after it's parent or grandparent.

For example a child is named Anaterius after his grandfather Anatarion.

An Elven name might be Karamia Brightsun or Dalarion Winterstorm.

Elven House names in Ayasumei tend to favor nature and weather themed names like: Lavenderjade, Wavecrest, Stormherald.

Elven names in Elendyl tend to be astronomical Starshine, Settingmoon, Brightsun

Human Names:

Human last names are far less complex. Most follow the patriarchal naming convention where the wife and children take on the husbands or father's last name. In Corobra the last name tends to be Matriarchal among humans. Elsewhere, if the name of the father is unknown, the child  then takes on their mother's last name.

In the event of an orphan or a child given up at birth, the last name then becomes the month they were born in. As the months were named by the Elves, it is not unusual for a human child to sometimes end up with an Elven sounding name.

In Nuria, Once a person comes of age, they change from their birth name name to one they have chosen for themselves. They keep their birth name as it becomes a 'middle name' to identify them to friends and family.  Thus Torq upon his name day wishes instead to be called Bashir. His new name is then Bashir Toriq. The last name is inherited from the father. If the father's last name is Al'meshir thenboth his sons and daughters bear the last name of Al'Meshir. However there is an exception to this rule. If someone dedicates their life to a cause or an order within Nuria, they may change their last name to reflect this dedication.

Male first name examples: Mahumar, Rashyd, Tukar,
Female first name Examples: Seket, Ayesha, Yasmine.
(Names tend to be Arabic or Egyptian sounding in origin)

In Jaing Shi, there are 'House' names and 'Clan' names. House names are patriarchal, as wives and children bear the father's house name once they marry. Common House names are anywhere from 3 to  6 letters long Sho,Tzi (Prnounced as just Zee), Izumei, Tanato, Makea.

Clan names embody an idea that multiple houses strive for, Like Serenity, Honor, Duty or Pride

First names are structured to be honorifics of ancestors or of  famous people who embody traits the parents wish for their children.

Jiang is a popular name as is Kimiko.

First names always proceed house names and clan names are rarely spoken of as most villages tend to be loyal to only one clan. When traveling to another village or within a city a person might either wish to introduce themselves by their First name and then Clan name or Last name and clan name if they are acting ob behalf of their family.

(Names are Japanese, Chinese or Korean sounding in origin)

Dwarven Names:

Among the Dwarves in Ayasumei the naming convention is maternal and clan based.

A dwarf is given three names at birth, they are given their rock name, their mother's last name and a clan name.

A rock name is usually four to ten letters long and very gruff sounding. It is said that when the Dwarven women discover that they are pregnant, they seek out a quiet place under ground and listen to the mountains speak. It is from that that they discover the rock name of their child.

Rock names can be made up of any combination of consonant and vowl. They usually sound gravely or gruff like Igumzir or Mariza. There is no distinction between male and female names.
Dwarven last names usually begin with something like Mag, Ig, Dur or Az and mostly end in: -ir, -um,-ar and -en. They tend to be consonant heavy like Magmar, Ignir, Durgen

Dwarven clan names often describe what a particular clan is known for like Silversmith, Stonechisel, Ironshield. When speaking to and traveling among those who are not dwarves, a dwarf will introduce themselves by their Rock name and clan name.

For example a dwarf would introduce himself to a human or elf as Tazuk Stonecarver. To his fellow Dwarves he would be Tazuk Ingnir of the Stonecarvers.

Orc names:

Orc names are simplistic, usually only 3 to 4 letters long. Some names may be longer. They are very guttural sounding like Urag and Gur. There is no difference between male and female names. Usually the fiercer sounding the name, the more respect the Orc has. Orcs can change their name through feats of strength, combat, hunting or bravery. Thus Groc might change her name to a more fierce sounding name like Uruzuk.

Renowned heroes and clan leaders often can earn a title in addition to the name they already have. The titles are still simplistic and usually describe the act that earned them the special tittle.
For example Rozag who single handedly killed a Tiger with only a stone might take on the title Tigerkiller or Skullcracker.

Orcs have no last name. Instead they take on the name of their clan's totem animal. Shamans of both genders are the only ones allowed to have a totem animal name separate from their clans. Their totem animal is said to be their spirit guide and therefore must be honored by the shaman.

Totem animals tend to be things like Crow, Elk, Wolf, Eagle, Tiger.

Because wolves are sacred to them, only the most powerful clan may claim Wolf as their totem animal. Should a clan rise in power, they give the defeated clan their old totem animal, and that clan is considered the lowest clan among all the other clans.
